Dear Tecumseh Family,
On Thursday, December 12, 2024, we were made aware of a family’s concern regarding an incident involving their child, a second grade student attending Barnard Elementary. The family believes that the student’s hair was cut while at school on December 11th.
Immediately, school officials began an investigation into the allegations made by the family. As we continue our investigation, we want our community to know we will work to make sure our students are educated on why actions like this are unacceptable.
As a school family, we recognize the cultural significance of an action like this, and we want to safeguard against anything like this happening again in the future. It is important that we continually remind our students of the proper uses for scissors and the importance of respecting the personal space of peers. Additionally, we see this as time to come together and collaborate to provide cultural education for our students, and we will be working to provide that cultural education during the next few months.
We take this situation seriously, and it is one of our primary goals to make sure that all of our students feel safe and accepted within our school community. We appreciate your understanding and your continued support of Tecumseh Public Schools. We encourage you to spend some time speaking with your child about respecting others and staying safe when using scissors while at school. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Robert H. Kinsey
Superintendent
